iPhone Duo and MagSafe: Using Chargers, Wallets, Stands and Car Mounts With a Foldable

MagSafe accessories are a big part of using an iPhone today: a charger on the nightstand, a wallet on the back, a mount in the car, a stand on the desk. On the iPhone Duo, the question people ask most is whether all of that still works once the phone is in a case. The short answer is that it depends on the case. This guide explains how iPhone Duo MagSafe use works with a case, which of our Duo cases are made for it, and how to get a secure hold on a folding phone.

Why the case decides how well MagSafe works

MagSafe accessories attach with magnets and line themselves up with a magnetic ring. Any case puts material between the phone and the accessory. The thicker or less magnetic that material, the weaker the hold, and the easier it is for a wallet to slide or a charger to sit off-center.

A MagSafe case fixes that with its own magnets built into the back, so the accessory snaps to the case with a strong, aligned hold. That's why the first rule for an iPhone Duo is simple: if you use magnetic accessories, choose a case with MagSafe in its name. Our MagSafe case guide explains the difference between "MagSafe" and "magnetic" in more detail.

Which of our iPhone Duo cases have MagSafe magnets

Almost all of them. Every iPhone Duo case with "MagSafe" in its title has built-in magnets for MagSafe chargers and accessories. The one exception today is the Matte Case with File Folder Design and Binder Clip, which isn't a MagSafe case. You can see the full range in our iPhone Duo cases collection.

MagSafe chargers

  • Center the charger on the ring. On a MagSafe case, the charger snaps into place by itself. If it sits off-center, charging can be slower or stop.
  • Take wallets off before charging. A charger can't charge through a wallet or a card. Remove the wallet first, and never leave cards between a charger and the phone.
  • Let it breathe. If the phone feels warm while charging, especially in bed or under a pillow, move it to an open surface.

Magnetic wallets

A folded iPhone Duo is already thicker than a regular iPhone, so a wallet on the back adds noticeable bulk. A few tips:

  • Carry only the two or three cards you actually use.
  • Check the hold before you rely on it: a wallet that slides on the back of the case will eventually fall off in a pocket.
  • Take the wallet off when you open the phone for a long video session if it gets in the way of your grip.

Stands: the best match for the big screen

The unfolded display is the reason many people choose the iPhone Duo, and a stand makes the most of it for video, recipes and video calls. You have two options.

A stand built into the case

The iPhone Duo MagSafe Case with Metal Stand and Energy Module Design has a three-dimensional metal stand integrated into the back. Flip it out to prop the phone upright. The stand supports vertical viewing only and isn't designed for landscape use. The case has built-in MagSafe magnets, hinge-area coverage and soft-touch matte TPU in Battery Black or Battery Grey.

A matching magnetic stand

Two of our Duo cases come with an optional magnetic stand that matches the design:

Choose the combo or set option in the Color selector on the product page to get the stand with the case.

Car mounts

A magnetic car mount holds the phone by the magnets in the case, so the case matters even more here. Before you drive:

  • Use a MagSafe case, not a non-magnetic one.
  • Attach the phone with the case's ring centered on the mount, then give it a gentle tug to check the hold.
  • Remove any wallet first. A wallet between the case and the mount weakens the hold a lot.
  • Use the mount with the phone folded. An unfolded foldable is much wider, and a mount isn't the place to use the big screen while driving anyway.

A slim everyday choice

If you mainly want reliable charging and a secure hold with as little bulk as possible, the iPhone Duo MagSafe Case with Hinge Protection is a good starting point. It has a built-in neodymium magnetic array for MagSafe chargers and compatible accessories, integrated hinge protection that moves with the fold, and a skin-feel coating for grip. Colors: Burgundy, Black, Orange, Blue, Gray and White.

iPhone Duo MagSafe FAQ

Can I use a MagSafe charger without taking off the case?

Yes, with a MagSafe case. Our Duo cases with MagSafe in the title have built-in magnets for MagSafe chargers.

Is a "magnetic" accessory the same as MagSafe?

Not always. Some accessories are simply magnetic and may hold differently from official MagSafe accessories. Check the accessory's own compatibility information.

Is there anything magnets in the case can affect?

The magnets in a MagSafe case are there to hold chargers and accessories. Keep magnetic accessories away from credit cards with magnetic stripes, hotel key cards and similar items, which magnets can affect.
